Monitoring Packages & Suites
Monitoring is accomplished by pairs of sensors and probes. Sensors use probes installed on remote devices to check for the transpiring of a predetermined event. One sensor can sense one specific service or performance metric of a server, network or workstation. For example, one sensor can detect disk space on a specific drive, and another might verifiy that your web server service is running ensuring that your web site is not down. Yet another sensor might actually monitor the content of your web pages to ensure no unauthorized editing is done.
If you want to monitor a business or IT function, these are generally done through using multiple sensors, called sensor packages. For example, if you wanted make sure that your Exchange server was always available, this would require eleven sensors. This is because there are many server services (applications that run in the background) that are required to run for Exchange to work.
If you wanted to monitor several business or IT functions you might consider a sensor suite, which is a combination of sensor packages.

Active Directory Package - Active Directory is a database service on most Windows-based networks that contains information on all of the users and computers that use server and network resources. It also controls access to resources on all servers in the domain via file security permissions based on objects (users and computers) in the directory. If Active Directory fails, users may not be able to logon to the network and/or access network resources. Microsoft Exchange depends heavily on this service as do other directory-enabled applications that allow single-sign-on ability. |

Workstation Package - Workstations require ample disk space for pagefiles to operate. Pagefiles perform a similar function to memory in your system in terms of performance enhancement. Pagefiles grow and shrink with use. Workstations that run low on disk space will often run into "Low on Virtual Memory Errors". This can be caused by the pagefile's inability to expand to meet the system's needs. This can happen for a wide variety of reasons such as inadequete space on existing disk drives, end users downloading inappropriate content such as MP3s or constantly working with large files such as on a graphic artsit's workstation.
